Opening the Vault: What We Know About Disney+

Written by on

Disney+ is being woven right into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we speak. Toy Story 4 will introduce the star of a new show on the Disney streaming service. And a major live-action remake is set to premiere on it too.

But it’ll also host the traditional movies the studio built its name on. Here’s what we know so far…

What’s the Disney+ Release Date?

The US Disney+ release date is 12th November 2019, but so far a Disney+ UK release date hasn’t been set. With the DisneyLife streaming service already up and running in the UK, things might play out differently.

So will Disney+ cost less than Netflix? According to CEO Bob Iger, yes – though of course, only the US price has been released to date.

All your favourites! The door to the Disney vault has slammed firmly shut, so no more waiting for a classic movie to come out of retirement. Disney has a new place to store that massive back-catalogue, and link it to new titles and spin-offs.

The Disney+ streaming service has got new and classic Pixar titles in there too. Monsters Inc and Toy Story tie-ins are in the works already – Forky Asks a Question and Monsters at Work, anyone?

And did you know that Disney now owns National Geographic?  It came with 20th Century Fox, part of the Disney family since March 2019.

That’s big news for another franchise because as you probably know, Disney also controls the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). For the first time ever, the X-Men can stand alongside Iron ManThor and company.

Could the MCU get any more gigantic? Actually, yes!

Avengers stars we know and love will reprise their roles on exclusive Disney+ shows. Just for starters Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier and Elizabeth Olson’s Scarlet Witch will burst out of the big screen and onto your TV or tablet.

Marvel’s President Kevin Feige reassured fans that fresh Disney+ content will fit into existing canon. Phew! Though no word on whether cancelled Netflix collaborations like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage will be revived.

Fans will face a tough decision, though – subscribe or miss out on crossovers.

New Live-Action Disney Movies? Tell Us More!

In a year that’s been heavy on live-action remakes, this classic’s no surprise addition – but it could be a game-changer. Lady and the Tramp will premiere, not in cinemas, but on Disney’s new streaming service.

Tl;dr? It’s one effective way to turn the Disney vault upside down.
